Tennis to Offer Equal Prize Money from 2027
Starting in 2027, the Women's Tennis Professionals' Association announces equal prize money for female and male players in joint tournaments holding 1,000 ranking points. This comes more than 60 years after Billie Jean King won the Italian Open when the prize money for women was less than that for her male opponent. Equal prize money will be awarded at clay court tournaments in Rome, as well as at the Canadian and Cincinnati events. The prize scheme will also be expanded to include tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and others. This announcement is part of efforts to achieve competitive and financial equality and marks an unprecedented milestone in the history of professional tennis. It is expected to enhance opportunities for female players and bridge the long-standing gap that has existed for decades.
