Russia's Role in Syria Anniversary
After nine years since Russia's military intervention in Syria in 2015 to save Bashar Assad's regime from collapse, the situation is moving towards a change in the relationship between Moscow and the Syrian regime. Russia has begun, amidst the escalating war in Ukraine and Assad's growing inability to withstand pressure, to re-establish contact with military factions and reevaluate its interests in Syria. This is evidenced by moves to reduce direct support for the regime and shift its military presence towards training and rehabilitation centers rather than permanent military bases. Experts believe that Moscow has chosen to protect its interests by reorganizing its military and political presence, after it became clear that the Assad regime is unable to defend itself independently, and that its continued presence in Syria has become tied to Moscow's broader strategic priorities.
