Libya warns of groundwater risks to reconstruction
The rising levels of groundwater in Libya pose a threat to reconstruction projects and infrastructure, as the phenomenon causes cracks and subsidence in buildings and roads, in addition to damage to water and sewage networks. The problem is attributed to increased consumption, network leaks, and the deterioration of infrastructure dating back to the Gaddafi era, which worsened after the events of 2011. This has led to flooded streets, damage to agricultural lands, and the displacement of residents. Currently, geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are being conducted, and the adoption of preventive engineering measures—such as foundation insulation and water drainage—is being encouraged. It is also essential to integrate geological data into development plans to ensure the sustainability of projects.
