Gaza Students Resume In-Person Classes
Gaza Strip students have returned to in-person classes for the first time since the outbreak of the Israeli war in October 2023, at the start of the 2026/2027 school year. This is despite exceptional circumstances marked by destruction, displacement, and shortages in educational resources. Three schools have been reopened to host students — two government schools and one managed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) — in addition to temporary learning points distributed across various areas of the strip. Approximately 541,000 students benefit from the educational process in Gaza, including 100,000 in UNRWA schools, with both in-person and virtual learning methods employed to meet everyone's needs. The Israeli occupation continues its efforts to completely destroy the educational infrastructure, targeting 100% of schools in the strip. Over 620,000 students have been deprived of education, and the number of student casualties has risen to more than 20,000 deaths. Despite these challenges, the return of students is a significant step toward restoring normal life in Gaza, though ongoing difficulties persist due to the war, destruction, and displacement.
