Germany approves fuel price reduction ahead of election
The German government has reached an agreement on a 2.5 billion euro aid package to address rising fuel prices. This includes restoring the fuel discount from October until the end of the year and reducing taxes on gasoline and diesel by 14 cents per liter until the end of 2026. The government is also considering implementing a fuel price cap starting from January next year, despite opposition from the Economy Minister, who favors maintaining market stability. Additionally, they are exploring direct financial support for low-income households to help mitigate the impact of inflation. The package comes amid a political and economic context marked by upcoming elections and their associated popular reactions, with mixed responses ranging from supporting economic structures to reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
