Brazil elections: Bolsonaro and Lula to contest runoff

The right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro and the leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have advanced to a runoff in the Brazilian presidential election after leading in the first round. Bolsonaro secured over 47% of the votes, while da Silva received around 45%. Neither candidate achieved the absolute majority required by election laws, forcing a second round scheduled for October 25. The intense competition is attributed to concerns over rising living costs, corruption, and insecurity. Bolsonaro has also harnessed potential support from protest votes, amidst clear differences in media coverage and the political environment. Analysts suggest that Bolsonaro's victory could strengthen right-wing policies and lead to economic and political changes, while da Silva faces challenges in gaining the support of voters affected by economic conditions and growing fears of foreign interference and corruption.
