Sonay reaches first 1,000-point final
British player Sonay Kartal, ranked 170 in the world, won her first career title at the Wuhan tournament after defeating Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals with scores of 7-6 (11-9) and 7-6 (7-5). She will face the ninth-ranked player worldwide, Iga Swiatek, or possibly Maya Khafrenka, in the final to claim her second WTA title following her previous win in Tunisia. The match featured significant fluctuations in performance, with Ostapenko leading in both sets but wavering due to tension and a high number of errors. By qualifying, Sonay, who had been absent from the courts for over six months due to injury, became the youngest qualifier in the history of the WTA Finals to be seeded, and she aspires to win her second title on the WTA Tour.
