Infantino Meets Opponents for First Time
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, is facing opposition for the first time since the summer crisis last year. It is expected that the 36 members of the FIFA Council will meet in Zurich on Thursday, about five months after tensions nearly led to his downfall. Despite the controversy surrounding the organization of the 2026 World Cup and efforts to bolster financial support, Infantino remains firmly in his position, thanks to the extensive support network he has built since 2016. While some federations are calling for more funds and reforms in the governance system, the majority of FIFA members continue to support their president. The council is expected to discuss strengthening his powers, implementing structural adjustments, as well as organizing the women's Club World Cup, which is likely to be hosted by the United States in 2028, and evaluating the FIFA Peace Award.
