Argentina cannot retire Number 10 after Messi
The Argentina national team is facing the issue of retiring the number 10 jersey in honor of Lionel Messi, who may leave the team despite FIFA regulations preventing the exclusive allocation of a single player’s number, as such numbers are tied to serial contracts in official tournaments. The number 10 is a historic symbol for the national team, associated with legends like Maradona and Messi. Retiring the jersey is seen as a tribute to its historical significance, but it conflicts with rules that allow numbers to be reused after a player’s retirement. The team’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, reiterated that the decision to have a successor wear the number is postponed, explaining that the legacy is passed on to future generations. He also suggested that Messi’s farewell could ignite a competition for the number, which holds a unique historical legacy.
