Manchester City plans defense with Abu Dhabi care funds
Manchester City is appealing against the decision to convict them of financial rules violations by asserting that the funds supporting their sponsorship contracts came from the Abu Dhabi government and not from the Abu Dhabi United Group, which owns the club. The independent committee had accused the group—owner of the club since 2008 and headed by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed—of financing a disguised scheme worth approximately £830.69 million (around $1.08 billion) to boost the club’s commercial revenue and improve its legal image. City insists that their evidence proves the money originated from the UAE government, but the committee dismissed their claim, describing it as an attempt to conceal the true source of funding. The committee also accused the investigation of being prepared in a way that hides the truth. The club plans to appeal the ruling. The case could lead to legal action from Etihad Airways, the club’s main sponsor, which announced it is considering taking legal steps against the English Premier League after the committee’s findings were published.
