Tunisian Athletes' Escape Sparks Uncertainty
Tunisia has witnessed a phenomenon of several athletes fleeing during their participation in the Mediterranean Games in Italy, seeking better living conditions and escaping the country's dire financial situation. Athlete Shehad Al-Jaljali, a wrestler, announced her escape due to low salaries and financial marginalization, as she was earning around $85 per month and living in harsh conditions. She was joined by four other athletes from different disciplines, including football, weightlifting, and gymnastics—all of whom were searching for a decent life. Over the years, the number of irregular migrants via boats—often called "death boats"—has increased, with many attempting to improve their living conditions or escape ongoing poverty and marginalization. Reports confirm that the phenomenon of athlete escape is not new; around 300 athletes have been affected over more than a quarter of a century, passing through various phases of irregular migration and legal changes of nationality. In recent years, some have even tried to escape by establishing private companies to increase their income, amid weak governmental financial support and declining investment in the sports sector. This trend threatens to grow further, leading to more talent loss.
