Rare footage of 1966 Battle of Hastings
In 1966, a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings was held nearby, involving 500 university students from Kent and Sussex who staged a lively, though imperfect, simulation on the original battlefield site. The event featured homemade weapons, amateur fighting, and a spirited rivalry, culminating in a brief but intense skirmish followed by camaraderie. Rare color footage of this inaugural event has been acquired by English Heritage, highlighting its playful and informal nature, contrasting with today's more historically accurate and professionally staged reenactments.
