NTSB reports near miss before Catalina crash
Federal investigators are examining a near-miss incident involving a Mercy Air medical helicopter off Catalina Island shortly before a separate fatal crash that killed three people. The Mercy Air Eurocopter nearly collided with the water after taking off from Pebbly Beach, just moments before the REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crashed into the ocean, resulting in three fatalities. The incident highlights the risks of night-time air rescue operations over water in low visibility conditions.
