Smotrich approves Hebron home demolitions
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich ordered the demolition of a large number of Palestinian buildings near the northern entrance to Hebron, following a shooting incident that resulted in the death of two Palestinians and the injury of six Israeli soldiers. Smotrich justified the decision by stating that the buildings were constructed illegally, in an area adjacent to a military checkpoint and observation tower, where Palestinians currently face long waits at crossings within a network of over 900 checkpoints and movement restrictions. It is expected that Israel will use the shooting incident to tighten restrictions on Palestinian movement, amid concerns that extremist right-wing parties might exploit the situation to fuel provocative rhetoric and ramp up measures to restrict Palestinians further.
