New Mexico fines Meta $25 billion
The state of New Mexico imposed a $25 billion fine on Meta for violating privacy protection laws in the Facebook user data collection scandal through Cambridge Analytica, which targeted over 43 million users and was used to create political advertisements during the 2016 elections. This ruling is one of the largest penalties ever against a tech company in favor of a U.S. state and aims to serve as a warning to technology companies to cease their violations. The fine is allocated to the state's education budget to support the construction of schools over the next hundred years. The case resulted from Meta’s violation of consumer protection laws by exploiting user data, and while 48 other states settled with Facebook, New Mexico chose to sue the company separately.
