US closes new crossing to Iran

The Iraqi authorities have closed the Shib border crossing with Iran, a move that indicates an escalation of pressure on Iran, reportedly driven by American pressures prompting Baghdad to shut down the crossing in an effort to increase economic and political tensions. It is believed that these measures are part of a U.S. strategy to exert greater pressure on Tehran, especially amid rising Israeli and American threats, despite experts ruling out the possibility of a complete land blockade due to the expanded borders and multiple smuggling routes. Analyses suggest that closing some crossings increases Iran's economic burdens, but the policies remain limited because Iran relies on numerous informal methods to transfer goods and people. It is expected that this step is part of broader measures to increase pressure on Tehran, either as part of ongoing efforts to reach an agreement or in preparation for a potential military confrontation.
