Designer Revives Lebanese Currency as Furniture

Lebanese designer Jana Sawaya transforms coins that have lost their monetary value into furniture pieces that blend beauty with practical function, aiming to preserve the memory of Lebanon's economic crisis since 2019. She used coins of 250 and 500 Lebanese pounds to design four items, including two lamps, a bench, and two side tables. She explained that inflation led people to collect large quantities of coins to sell based on their metallic value. The designs feature a pattern resembling fish scales, utilizing the contrasting colors of copper and silver coins, which are fixed in place with metal wires and soldering to ensure durability. The collection is temporary, as it faces difficulty in gathering the necessary coins, especially the 250-pound denomination. It reflects an emotional and artistic connection to those coins, with the goal of combining beauty with everyday functionality.
