Tehran exerts pressure via internet cable blockades

The article reveals Iran's threats to the submarine cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to impose a permit system on them as part of its efforts to control one of the most vital global energy and communication corridors. These cables, including a branch of the AAE-1 cable, Falcon, and Gulf Bridge, connect Asia to Europe and the Gulf countries, carrying all types of data—from communications to financial transactions. Although the likelihood of causing global disruptions remains limited, any damage to these cables could impact communications in countries like Qatar, especially if cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz are affected, where a specialized fleet exists for repairs. Iran is leveraging its relative legal rights, despite not ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to threaten the imposition of a permit system on these cables. This reflects its intentions to exert military and electronic pressure on critical communication infrastructures.
