Veto Challenges Leading Candidate in UN Race

The article discusses the race to select the new Secretary-General of the United Nations after António Guterres's term ends on December 31, 2026. Polls within the Security Council show that all candidates, including Rebeca Grynspan, face opposition from the five permanent members (the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom), who are exercising their veto rights against them. Although Grynspan leads the non-binding voting, the objections from the permanent members prevent her from being officially nominated, opening the door for new candidates. Legally, any nomination must gain the approval of at least nine of the fifteen members without a veto from the five permanent members before the General Assembly can finalize the appointment. The race is expected to face further challenges, with possible new candidacies, especially given the lack of consensus and the significance of potentially having a woman as a candidate for the first time since the organization’s founding over 80 years ago.
