Belgian teacher sues over veil ban

Belgian teacher Khadija Amjoud, who works in special education for children with special needs in the city of Asinidi, faced dismissal procedures due to her insistence on wearing the hijab while performing her duties, despite her professional record and competence being highly regarded. The crisis began when she was asked to remove her hijab in accordance with regional policies that imposed a ban on visible religious symbols, including the hijab, starting in September 2024. Amjoud refused, leading to disciplinary actions that culminated in her dismissal in September 2026, although she had been employed since 2024. Her case has become a key point of controversy surrounding the concept of "neutrality" in education in Belgium, with her supporters viewing her resistance as a form of discrimination against Muslim women, while others see it as a political bias against religious expressions within educational institutions.
