Ukrainian, German Reactions to Trump's Ukraine Call
Statements from European officials affirmed their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while reminding that changing leadership in Ukraine during the ongoing war, which has lasted more than four years, is not acceptable. They highlighted that Zelensky enjoys the backing of the Ukrainian people and is governing the country amidst military and political challenges. Additionally, the German Foreign Minister emphasized that European support for Ukraine remains steadfast and includes increasing pressure on Russia to push for peace negotiations. In response to Trump’s comments calling for the election of a new Ukrainian president, Germany considered such remarks to reflect a "moral bankruptcy," as the divergence between Berlin and Washington continues regarding crisis management and support for the current leadership.
