Belgian police clear trade union protest

Trade unions in Belgium organized widespread protests in Brussels against austerity measures in the 2027 budget, with between 30,000 and 40,000 demonstrators participating. The protests led to the cancellation of around 140 flights and disrupted public transportation. The protesters oppose tax hikes and reduced government spending, especially the increase of VAT from 21% to 22% and changes to working hours. They are calling on the government to withdraw the austerity plan, which aims to save 10 billion euros, and to propose an alternative plan that would save 21 billion euros, primarily by placing a greater burden on corporations and the wealthy. Concerns are mounting that these measures could deepen the decline in purchasing power and impact family living conditions. The unions are escalating their protests and issuing warnings of future demonstrations before the budget is discussed in Parliament.
