EU backs extension of UNIFIL in Lebanon
The European Union supports extending the mission of the UNIFIL force in southern Lebanon, whose mandate expires at the end of 2026, amid escalating tensions with Israel and the worsening security crisis in the region. The force consists of about 7,500 personnel from around 50 countries and faces ongoing challenges despite its presence since 1978, especially after the escalation of conflict following Hezbollah's attacks on Israel and the increased military operations, which heighten security risks in the area. The European Union emphasizes the need to avoid a security vacuum in southern Lebanon and advocates for extending UNIFIL's mission to ensure stability, continuing efforts and understandings towards an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
