Trump discusses potential fuel tax suspension

The article discusses how the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a suspension of federal fuel taxes and a rollback of vehicle fuel efficiency standards, with the aim of reducing costs and reversing the electric vehicle restrictions implemented by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Trump plans to put an end to fuel efficiency improvement requirements through the end of the decade, setting an average efficiency target of 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031—a level that American cars had already achieved in 2024. This move is viewed as a measure to lower consumer costs amid rising fuel prices, but it has been criticized for potentially increasing fuel consumption and leading to higher emissions from the transportation sector, which remains the largest source of greenhouse gases in the United States.
