Pacific Ruler's Paradoxical Symbols

The article highlights the political transformation of Samoa's Prime Minister, Lā’uli Lioatia Schmidt. It reveals a leaked video from 2007 in which he raises his hand in a Nazi salute and shouts "Long live Hitler," before assuming his official position and taking the oath of office while wearing a Jewish scarf, asserting support for Israel. This behavior reflects a historical and psychological paradox in his stance, rooted in Samoa's German colonial background, where he bears a German surname and is influenced by a devout Nouree culture that believes in Old Testament prophecies. Moreover, Samoa, with a population of approximately 221,000, adheres to an orthodox religious culture that elevates Israel and supports its policies through aid and backing at the United Nations, exploiting the decline of Arab support for Palestine. The island nation has transformed these islands into diplomatic tools to serve international interests, particularly in the battle for votes at global forums.
