German Jewish Community Divided on Left Party

The Left Party won the Berlin elections held in September 2023, securing around 26% of the votes, surpassing the Christian Democratic Party, which received less than 19%. The party is now heading to form a government coalition amidst widespread controversy over its credibility in protecting Jewish life, following the emergence of an anti-Semitic rapper and statements from its leadership accused of being lenient towards anti-Semitism within the party. The Central Council of Jews in Germany has criticized the party and called for not forming an alliance with it, citing alleged violations of protections for the Jewish community. Meanwhile, 150 Jews from diverse backgrounds are supporting the party, asserting that the concerns are politically motivated and aimed at exploiting the left, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between criticism of Israeli policies and anti-Semitism. The discussion about forming Berlin’s government continues, with the party’s candidate, Elif Eralp, reaffirming her commitment to supporting Jewish life and engaging with the community, along with clear condemnations of incitement and violence.
