Europe's Difficult Route to Digital Sovereignty

The article focuses on the growing concerns across Europe regarding the development of large data centers and their impact on natural resources, especially water and electricity. It explains that data centers consume significant amounts of water for cooling purposes, with one center in Colorado using more than three million liters daily. The establishment of new centers increases demand for resources in drought-prone areas, such as certain regions in the United States and Europe. The article also raises alarms about electricity consumption, which could increase by up to 40% in Finland by 2025 due to the expansion of data centers. Local protests and resistance in places like Austria, Ireland, and France have led to the cancellation or modification of some projects. Conversely, the article highlights models of data centers that employ sustainable technologies, such as closed-loop water systems and reduced energy consumption, aiming to achieve efficiency and sustainability in resource use.
