Russia Deploys Migrants at NATO Borders
Latvia is facing an increase in the flow of migrants across its borders with Belarus, amid official accusations that Russia and Minsk are supporting organized networks to smuggle migrants from the Middle East and Africa into northern Europe, with the goal of destabilizing the political landscape and influencing domestic affairs ahead of the parliamentary elections. Authorities have managed to return over 11,000 people, while others have crossed the borders through gaps or dug tunnels under the fence, utilizing organized smuggling networks that transport migrants through Russia and Minsk, according to media reports. This has been accompanied by criticism from officials who claim that Moscow is using this issue as a leverage against NATO countries, despite denials from the Kremlin. Latvia has intensified its security measures, including deploying the army and the National Guard, to address what it perceives as a potential wave of migration. During this year, two tunnels beneath the border fence have been discovered, with these operations primarily targeting migrants from Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Eritrea, and Cuba.
