An investigation by Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reveals that Iraqi economic offices affiliated with political parties and factions have established a network of contractors and companies that dominate the local oil market and influence elections. Iran uses a portion of the profits from smuggling black market oil to support Iraqi electoral candidates, as well as to fund groups like Hamas and the Houthis. Experts estimate that around 40 networks control approximately 200 influence cells within government institutions and have established over a thousand contracting companies. These networks benefit from armed groups, as investigations continue into the corruption of prominent officials, such as the Deputy Minister of Oil.
