Ecuador Prison Riots Fatalities

Ecuador witnessed the death of eight people and injuries to ten others during riots inside two prisons, with four killed in Cotopaxi Prison and four in Pichincha Prison. Since 2021, more than 500 prisoners have died in Ecuadorian jails. Although the military has taken control of some facilities, drug trafficking gangs continue to challenge authorities from within the prisons by issuing assassination orders or extortion.
