EU Parliament grants Sakharov Prize 2026 to ICC

The European Parliament announced that it will collectively award the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court and its officials, in recognition of their role in defending international law and pursuing those responsible for serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. This comes amid rising European concerns over U.S. sanctions targeting court officials and their impact on the independence of international justice, with Members of Parliament calling for financial support and continued adherence to the obligations of the Rome Statute to ensure the court's full independence. It is worth noting that the prize is awarded annually to defenders of human rights and justice, and the ceremony is scheduled to take place in December in Strasbourg, France.
