Italy urges halt on Tunisian lobster imports

Tunisia is facing a crisis in the fishing sector due to exceeding the authorized amount of red king crab. Reports indicate that export licenses have permitted a quantity that surpassed the allowed quota by 41.6%, leading Italy to suspend imports of this product until the end of 2026. This measure comes as part of preparations for a meeting in Rome focused on the fishing management rules for 2027, where Tunisia is calling for a revision of its quota due to the lack of reflection of its fleet's historical activity data. This issue affects Tunisian seafood exports, especially to the Italian market, and raises legal and commercial risks, with tensions escalating between the two sides over certification oversight and catch quantities.
