Tunisia Second Least Poor in Africa
Tunisia ranks second in Africa in terms of low multidimensional poverty, with 1% of the population living in multidimensional poverty according to the United Nations report of 2026, only slightly behind Seychelles, which stands at 0.9%. Tunisia leads the North African countries, ahead of Algeria (1.4%), Egypt (1.5%), and Libya (2%). The report highlights a historic global rise in multidimensional poverty rates, where 1.2 billion people (18.9% of the population) live in 108 developing countries, with a particular focus on children, who account for more than half of the world's poor. The index is based on measures including health, education, and living standards, noting a significant increase in global poverty levels since 2010. However, the data also show that 33 countries have successfully halved their poverty rates within 15 years, reaffirming that poverty can be eradicated through effective policies and adequate funding.
