Tunisia marks 63rd Independence Day

On October 15, 2026, Tunisia will commemorate the 63rd anniversary of Independence Day, which marks the country's liberation from French occupation with the complete withdrawal of French forces from the Bizerte naval base in 1963. The struggle for independence began on January 18, 1952, with a military resistance option and intensified after the French attack on Sidi Youssef in February 1958, which resulted in hundreds of martyrs. On July 17, 1958, the Tunisian government initiated the diplomatic evacuation of French forces, but tensions escalated again in July 1961. A ceasefire was declared on July 23, and the final withdrawal of French troops from Bizerte was completed on October 15, 1963, marking the end of French colonization in Tunisia.
