The Tunisian Water Observatory called for the urgent launch of an investment program to upgrade drinking water and irrigation networks and to reduce leakages, in order to ensure continuous supply despite the declining efficiency of the networks and the pressures on water resources. It clarified that the improvement in dam resources during the spring of 2026 did not reflect on water distribution during the summer, with outages continuing and leakages increasing. Water loss rates reached 23% in the water networks and 30% in the irrigation networks. The report projected that per capita water availability would decrease to around 200 cubic meters annually by 2050, with groundwater extraction exceeding its renewable capacity, estimated at about 3,217 million cubic meters per year compared to renewable resources of 2,412 million cubic meters. It called for the activation of water legislation, support for water authorities, and the settlement of energy debts to ensure ongoing distribution. It also advocated for a national goal to increase the reuse and valorization of treated wastewater from the current 10% to 80% by 2050.
