Javad Zarif Advocates East-West Balance
Iran, led by Javad Zarif, is striving to redefine the balance of its external relations by developing its ties with major powers such as China and Russia. Zarif emphasizes that reliance on a single power weakens Iran's bargaining power and diminishes its independence. He advocates for a comprehensive balancing policy focused on diversifying partnerships to achieve greater autonomy, rejecting the notion that relations with the East are driven by necessity or compulsion. Instead, he underscores that this balance enhances Iran's ability to maneuver and pursue its interests by managing its foreign relations more strategically. This perspective poses a threat to hardliners who oppose rapprochement with Eastern powers, as Zarif aims for national strength to encompass internal cohesion, technological capacity, and popular legitimacy—not solely military power—to ensure lasting security.
