Lebanon's sovereignty tested after UNIFIL exit

The end of UNIFIL's mission in southern Lebanon marks a critical phase that could impact the sovereignty and security of the region. Lebanon is facing a real test of its ability to protect its territory and its people. The Lebanese government and civilians are questioning whether the state is ready to assume responsibility after the withdrawal of international forces, especially amid ongoing security and political disagreements, issues related to Israeli withdrawals, and the presence of arms outside state control. Despite the European Union's support through training and aid to the Lebanese forces, a withdrawal without a clear plan to ensure regional stability could expose the south to risks of escalation and tension. Maintaining sovereignty, controlling the borders, and addressing security threats remain the foremost challenges for Lebanon in the coming period.
