Iran reports record execution increase

The Iranian judicial authorities have announced the execution of a man convicted of killing a police officer by ran over during clashes that occurred in 2022 in Bandar Abbas. He was sentenced for the premeditated murder of Officer Reza Ehtrami, who was serving in the emergency unit. This comes amid an increase in the implementation of death sentences in the country, which has coincided with a surge in fuel smuggling due to falling prices and the expansion of smuggling networks. Additionally, human rights criticisms point to rising execution rates, with Iran recording one of the highest global incarceration rates. These measures are attributed to heightened security tensions and clashes with smugglers, amidst the economic crisis and growing hardships faced by society.
