Panama seismic event does not disrupt canal

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Panama at a depth of 12.6 kilometers, causing damage to some buildings but not affecting the vital Panama Canal for trade. The affected areas, including the capital and Colon in Herrera, experienced landslides and damage to historic and residential buildings, with a tsunami warning system activated and evacuation orders issued in parts of coastlines along Central America and the United States. Authorities also announced the closure of schools and suspension of subway services as precautionary measures, amid warnings of potential tsunami waves arriving in the following hours.
