Forest fires smother Nanggaraya with smoke

The city of Palangkaraya in Indonesia is experiencing widespread wildfires amid thick, rising smoke, caused by the dry season and the El Niño phenomenon. This situation worsens air quality and poses a threat to public health, with the possibility of smoke spreading to neighboring areas such as Singapore and Malaysia. Residents are attempting to extinguish the fires with simple tools, amidst difficulties in firefighting efforts, and the situation is worsened by illegal burning practices and the drying of peatlands. The fires lead to air pollution and health risks, particularly respiratory illnesses, with their effects continuing through the summer season, peaking between July and September.
