Student protests shake France amid arrests

Tens of thousands of students in France staged protests to oppose the deterioration of the educational situation and the shortage of teachers, with over 71,500 participants, including 20,000 in Paris. The government attempted to address the crisis by bringing in 3,000 substitute teachers and approved a plan by the end of October. However, protesters are demanding improvements to infrastructure and a reduction in classroom overcrowding. Although most of the demonstrations were peaceful, clashes occurred in several cities, involving police using tear gas and batons, resulting in hundreds of students, teachers, and police officers being injured, and more than 6,600 people being arrested. Calls are ongoing for new protests on October 13, with demands to enhance educational equality, amid political discussions about the 2027 education budget and a proposed 1.4% increase in funding to €90.9 billion.
