U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the execution of Nidal Hassan, a former military psychologist convicted of carrying out the 2009 Fort Hood shooting attack, by firing squad. This decision could pave the way for the first military execution in over 60 years. Hassan was sentenced to death in 2013 after killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in the attack on a Texas military base. The Department of Defense announced that Trump’s decision was made based on the recommendation of the Secretary of Defense. A date and location for the execution have not yet been specified, but military regulations stipulate that it should be carried out within 60 to 150 days of approval. If carried out, it would be the first military execution since the execution of a soldier in 1961, and comes amid American preparations to resume carrying out military death sentences, with speculation about the use of a facility in Indiana for the execution.
