Army refuses concessions; UNIFIL extension requested

The article discusses the efforts of Lebanese MPs to reconsider United Nations Security Council Resolution 2790, which pertains to extending the mandate of the UNIFIL forces in South Lebanon. They fear that the withdrawal of these forces might occur before the Lebanese state regains full sovereignty over its territory. The MPs held a press conference and submitted a human rights memorandum calling for the continuation of UNIFIL and the enhancement of its effectiveness, while insisting on empowering the Lebanese Army to carry out its responsibilities and preventing security and humanitarian gaps. They also pointed out that there are significant risks to Lebanon's security and stability, and that any extension of the mission should come in a form that ensures the ongoing international role and stabilizes the situation in the south.
