Qatar Energy has signed one of the largest liquefied natural gas purchase agreements in history with American company Cheniere, involving the purchase of 4 million tons of gas annually for up to 23 years until 2054. This move comes amid the ongoing crisis across the Strait of Hormuz, through which, for years, about 20% of the world's supply has passed, due to tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel. The agreement aims to diversify Qatar’s supply sources and protect itself from potential disruptions to shipping through the strait, while also enhancing supply flexibility by acquiring gas from other regions, including parts of the Americas and Africa. The purchase will be based on the Henry Hub price index, with fixed liquefaction fees, and there is potential to expand the Sabine Pass plant in Louisiana to increase capacity to more than 50 million tons annually, thereby strengthening Qatar's supply security and reducing dependence on the strait.
