Irish Effort to Canonize WWI Hero Priest
A church in Ireland is advancing the case for sainthood for Fr Willie Doyle, an Irish priest and World War I chaplain known for his bravery and compassion during battles such as the Somme and Passchendaele. Doyle was killed by shellfire in 1917 while helping wounded soldiers, and the Catholic Church considers him an ecumenical martyr. A diocesan inquiry has collected extensive documentation supporting his canonization, which will now be sent to the Vatican for further evaluation.
