Syrian border guard forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs from Lebanon in the Serghaya area of the Damascus countryside. After an exchange of gunfire, the smugglers fled into Lebanese territory. Authorities seized 280 kilograms of hashish and 28,000 Captagon pills. Experts say smuggling attempts and tensions are rising along the Syrian-Lebanese border. One expert linked the border activity to Iran’s displeasure with Damascus. A security expert called for tighter joint control of unofficial crossings, more intelligence sharing, and efforts to pursue smuggling networks.
