US Vote Not Transformative

The article argues that the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the midterm elections does not represent a historic or radical shift; it was driven primarily by voters’ anger over high prices and inflation, not by a lasting social realignment. Between 2018 and these elections, control of one or both chambers of Congress changed hands five times across five consecutive elections. Yet the back-and-forth between the parties did not lead to major policy changes, because governments have limited ability to curb inflation. The writer concludes that U.S. foreign policy is more stable than voters’ moods, and that rapid changes in party control often replace those in power without greatly changing the course of the economy or policy.
