Libya's Migration Trade
The sea route from eastern Libya to the Greek island of Crete has become one of the main irregular migration routes to Europe. Around 20,000 people have taken it this year, and 710 migrants arrived in Greece aboard 14 boats on October 20. Some pay smugglers as much as $4,000 for a journey lasting about a day and a half. The route’s growth is attributed in part to tighter controls on other routes and smuggling networks resuming operations using new methods. Human smuggling in Libya is linked to an informal economy and established networks, but no direct ties between smugglers on the coast and the Haftar family have been established, nor has any link been found between the increase in arrivals and the Libyan-Turkish maritime agreement. Experts warn that EU cooperation with Libyan authorities to curb migration could strengthen the influence of local actors. A report by the International Organization for Migration says that around 950,000 migrants and refugees are registered in Libya, many of them vulnerable to exploitation and with limited access to medical care.
