Impact of Gibe Dam on Nile Flow
The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the Megitc irrigation dam as part of development efforts for the town of Gondar and the surrounding region. The dam has a storage capacity of 185 million cubic meters and aims to provide irrigation water for more than 17,000 hectares, as well as improve access to potable water in the city and neighboring areas. Ethiopian officials emphasized that the dam's purpose is to enhance agriculture, economic development, and job creation. Meanwhile, Egyptian experts noted that the dam is small and does not significantly affect Egypt's water resources, affirming that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is the only structure with a confirmed impact on Egypt’s water share. This move comes amid ongoing disagreements with Egypt over the filling and operation of the Renaissance Dam, with Egypt emphasizing the need for a binding agreement to ensure its water rights.
