Iraq Surpasses Germany in Power Security
The article discusses a British institute's classification of energy supply security in countries around the world. Surprisingly, Germany was ranked lower than Iraq despite suffering from electricity shortages and frequent outages. The report attributes this to an evaluation methodology that primarily depends on the continuous availability of electricity, excluding renewable energy production such as wind and solar power from the standard of constant availability. This has led to a weak assessment of Germany's supply security. Conversely, Iraq suffers from chronic energy shortages, with a demand of 27.9 gigawatts compared to an supply of 14.7 gigawatts—an approximate deficit of 47%. Although data indicates that nearly 100% of the population has access to electricity, the availability is unstable, and the electricity supply is unreliable.
